After months of packing, moving and unpacking we have landed in the deep south confronted by a cold front which has left everyone in the house with a hacking cough.

Ah, that summer garden I nursed and spent so much time on all spring only to leave it with reckless abandon to the care of my overworked husband when I went out-of-town for two months….

Irish oatmeal

My new friend, Peggy, says to me,”Oh, you use your crock pot, do ya? Have you tried making Irish oats in it yet?”
“I didn’t know you could make oatmeal in the crock pot,” I answer.
“Oh, yeah. Who wants to stand there stirring the milk all day waiting for it to warm up?” Peggy is the only person I’ve ever met who also complains about how long it takes milk to warm on the stove in order to make oatmeal. “Try it,” she says. “You’ll never go back.”
First off, I thought I must be the only person in the universe who makes oatmeal with milk. Every time I tell someone I do, they look at me like I have nine heads. That’s how my mama made it.
This was so good, I didn’t even want to share it.
Now that’s good food. And I owe it all to Peggy.

Just showing off my babies. These are the ones I planted in the backyard, and they don’t all get an equal amount of sun or as much sun I’d like them to. Some are doing better than others. But they are refusing to give up! Take a look at what will soon end up in my tummy.

This recipe is courtesy of Lisa, the sister of my wonderful friend Cyril. He generously offered up his sister’s recipe when he heard about my crock pot recipe blog. Fresh from the kitchens of southern Louisiana, it was a meal to feast on! Thanks Cyril and Lisa! Long live New Orleans!
