Say, whaaat? Why would you need to use the crock pot when you could cook these in 15 to 20 minutes on the stove top? I tried these when we were living in the hotel and had no stove top, but it would also work during the holidays to free up that stove top for other things.
Unfortunately, I just couldn’t figure it out.
I looked it up on-line and read that shucking the corn and wrapping the cobs in aluminum foil with just a bit of water at the bottom produced a steamed, crunchy sensation.
Well, I didn’t have any aluminum foil. Packed in storage and rarely used, I wasn’t about to buy more. I would just leave them in the husks.
How I cooked them:
Stuck with my smallest crock pot, I couldn’t fit more than two in the darn thing with the husks on. I shoved and shoved. I added enough water to cover the bottom of the crock pot. They cooked for about three and a half hours.
End Result:
Hmm…..they came out tasting like the flavor of….husks. (Which tastes like dirt if you’ve never eaten them.) Not something I’d serve at a party, but they weren’t unedable either. We ate them anyway.
So, I tried again. This time without the husks.
How I cooked them:
Without the husks, I could fit in many more. Again, I added enough water to cover the bottom of the crock pot and let them cook for about three and a half hours.
End Result:
Well, they didn’t taste like dirt, but I wouldn’t bother with this—ever again. I burnt them just a pinch on the ends. I had no idea that was even possible. If I don’t have a stove top or a grill….or a fire pit, I won’t bother trying to cook corn on the cob.
And yes, we ate them anyway.
What about you all? Anyone ever tried this? Had better luck?

I have made those a few times in the oven. 400F for about 20 minutes with some butter and spices. they came out delicious, not grill – delicious but still better than any other time I tried to make them in the husk.
And if you don’t have a grill here is a great resolution to that :

Should have tried to make it like cooler corn…heated your water to boiling in the crock pot, put in your corn, wrap foil around the top to seal in heat and turn off…let sit for 30 or so minutes…or just use your cooler
Thanks cornaholic! I didn’t even realize you could boil water in a crock pot. Must take a lot of patience! 🙂
I appreciate the tip. I didn’t know this. Will try.
And as usual Ewa, you have such great ideas!!
I’ve never heard of cooler corn. Thanks for introducing me to something new! 🙂
