I noticed the amount of sugar “non-sugar added” applesauce had in it the other day when I needed it for a recipe, and that did it. I decided to make my very own. So easy, I’ll never go back! And of course, it can be made in the CROCK POT! Yippie!
(From Simply Recipes posted by ELISE Oct 7, 2008)
What you’ll need:
3 lbs of peeled, cored, and quartered Golden Delicious apples.
4 Tbsp lemon juice
1 cinnamon stick
1/8 cup of dark brown sugar
1 cup of water
1/2 teaspoon of salt
How to Make it:
1. Put all ingredients in crock pot.
2. Cover and bring to a boil.
3. Lower heat and SIMMER FOR 2 HOURS.
4. Remove from heat.
5. Remove cinnamon stick and mash apples with fork.
End Result:
JUST LIKE STORE-BOUGHT! Except, I know how much sugar it contains. I use it in place of sugar for muffins, cakes, and even in oatmeal. It makes a decent amount and I freeze what’s left. Elise says you can freeze it for up to a year!

Just FYI, they count natural sugars in nutrition labels, which is prob why it seemed so high. fruit is nature’s candy!
Thanks for the info, J! I did not know this. You learn something new every day! 🙂
and if you run out of sugar, you can use honey or molasses or stevia.
i use no sweetening only a tiny amount of sea salt–and always leave the peels on..as i know my apple trees personally, they are not sprayed.
then run it all through the blender so lightly as to leave some texture for palate interest.
great as side dish, just add a dash of cardamom, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg, for pork or chicken, or a topping for lamb or pork roast. it keeps meats tender..
little miss Pelar will undoubtedly love her mom’ s apple sauce. no lemon juice for hers..
Nadine–I didn’t know I could leave peels on! I miss talking to you! A million thanks for reading my sexual tourism article. I was so flattered! Will write you on Facebook. I know you’re never on there much, so just keep your eyes open for a message from me!
well jennifer, reciprocally, i did not know (think of) cooking my fruits in the crockpot..simple solutions seem to elude me..i invariably try anything the hard way first–and then –if smart enough i will do it the easier way..duh!
